Healthcare Assistant Roles
The Healthcare Assistant is responsible for providing clinical and clerical support to the Practice Nurse and General Practitioners. The post will be to help maintain standards of care, achievement of the GP contract and local delivery plan targets and necessitates that the healthcare assistant develops their skills and service in direct response to the practice population health needs.
All information both verbal and written relating to patient and staff gained through employment within the practice is confidential. Disclosure to any unauthorised person is a serious offence.
The post holder should be conversant with all treatment room procedures and COSHH regulations and carry them out in accordance to practice protocols.
Key Responsibilities;
Responsibility for meeting the care needs of patients who have been transferred to you by a GP or Nursing team, by organising workload to meet the needs identified whilst setting realistic objectives to meet the inequalities and poverty of the area to enable optimum patient benefit.
Professional;
- Maintain a current membership of a professional defence organisation
- Be actively involved in professional development and maintain a professional profile.
- Act at all times within the boundaries of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
- Maintain personal professional development by actively participating in Personal Development Reviews, completing mandatory training and attending staff meetings.
- Maintain contemporaneous records as per policies and NMC guidance.
- Maintain at all times a regard for patient dignity and safety.
- Be aware of the legal issues pertinent to the role of a senior HCA
- Be familiar with the changing structure of health care provision relevant to general practice
Key Tasks / Clinical Responsibilities;
- Work within the Clinical Governance Framework to ensure that Clinical Governance is embedded in clinical practice.
- Undertake New Patients Registration checks in accordance to practice protocol
- Undertake NHS Health Checks in accordance with national programme
- Assist in chronic disease reviews/illness management clinics i.e. follow up CHD, CKD
- Perform, evaluate and interpret non-invasive blood pressure examination
- Promote Health Education by providing lifestyle advice, smoking cessation within agreed guidelines
- Promote Sexual Health in accordance with the national Chlamydia Screening Programme
- Undertake basic measurements height, weight, BMI, waist circumferences, smoking histories and recording this information for audit purposes
- Obtain and test urine specimens, record the outcome and inform appropriate member of team if necessary
- Communicate effectively with patients particularly during difficult, complex and sensitive issues and use their preferred method of communication.
- Be the first aider for the practice
- Communicate effectively with practice team members, other healthcare professionals and outside agencies
- Work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in order to provide an optimum level of care delivery to patients
Administration / Clerical;
- Support the practice in research and clinical audits as required.
- Summarise medical records onto the computer as per practice guidelines
- Operate a stock control system to ensure there is an adequate level of stock, up to date blood bottles, urine bottles, needles, syringes, childhood vaccines etc.
- Responsible for maintaining registers and operating a call and recall systems in relation to assigned responsibilities i.e. hypertension, near patient testing, epilepsy, mental health, childhood immunisation programme and general bloods
- Assist with contacting those patients who are at risk during the practice Influenza and Pneumococcal campaign
Computer System;
- To fully use technology as requested and co-operate in the introduction of technological developments
- Assist in the development and improvement of the systems
- Assist in producing audits, statistics relating to patient activity as required
- Comply in full with the Data Protection Act
Training / Personal Development;
- A willingness and aptitude to undergo appropriate training to update and develop new skills to enhance the practice and your personal performance and maintain a personal record of attendance
- Ensure that all team members within the practice are fully aware of the extent of nursing care available at the practice and what your role is in delivering that care
Other;
- Acknowledge your own limitations when delivering care and adhere strictly to protocols and guidelines
- Seek advice and support when necessary
